Valtrex Uses:

Valtrex therapy is used for those shingles (herpes zoster), cold sores (herpes simplex), and genital herpes. This is an anti-viral medication and studies have shown that it successfully interrupts the process of herpes virus duplication. This means that it is very effective in reducing the number of new genital herpes outbreaks in adults who have a normal immune system.

How to Use Valtrex:

Valtrex should be swallowed by mouth. Make sure to follow the prescribed instructions and complete all of the medication you receive. You should not miss any doses or discontinue use of this prescription without telling your primary care physician. Doing this could result in inadequate treatment.

Valtrex Side Effects:

Before using Valtrex, tell your doctor if your immune system is compromised by advanced HIV disease, or if you have had a bone marrow or kidney transplant. By doing so you can avoid possibly serious complications.
Some reported side effects include nausea, headache, vomiting, weakness, stomach pain, loss of appetite, or dizziness. These should fade as you adjust to the medication. If any of these side effects continue or are bothersome, discuss them with your doctor.
If you do not improve or if your symptoms become worse, talk to your doctor.

Valtrex Precautions:

Tests show that Valtrex is safe for most people. Your doctor should know if you have any kidney disease, allergies, or blood disorders. Valtrex should be used during pregnancy only if there is a clear need; please discuss the risks of doing so with your doctor. Talk to your doctor before taking Valtrex while breastfeeding, since it's not known if the medication is excreted in breast milk.

Valtrex Drug Interactions:

Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including cimetidine or probenecid.

Valtrex Notes:

Valtrex is available by prescription only for healthy adults. You can still spread herpes to others while taking Valtrex.
If you are taking Valtrex for cold sores, do not take more than two doses, twelve hours apart, for one day.

Missed Dose of Valtrex:

Do not double dose on Valtrex. If you accidentally miss a dose, skip it and continue with your regular schedule. You should try to follow your dosing schedule carefully.

Valtrex Storage:

Store this medication at room temperature between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 to 25 degrees C) away from heat and light. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.
